Maintaining Your Whole Home Whole Water Filter

How you maintain your system depends on the type of system you have custom designed for your home. Some of our whole home water filter systems require no maintenance at all, while others will need to be maintained every 1-2 years. In the case of an ion exchange system, adding salt once or twice per year is all you need to do ($30-$50 per year). The maintenance can be easily done yourself or we can do it for you and the same goes for whole house iron filters for well water.

One of the most overlooked aspects of home water treatment is the convenience and long-term benefits of in home water systems. Unlike point-of-use filters that only purify water at a specific outlet, in-home systems provide comprehensive coverage throughout your entire house. This means every tap, shower, and appliance benefits from cleaner, safer water.

Why it Pays to go the Whole Mile and get Full House Water Filtration

Your home is full of water. It is everywhere in the pipes, from the kitchen to the bathroom. That means if your water has impurities when it comes in, those impurities get everywhere. You may have hard water, which means excessive amounts of calcium and magnesium, among other things, and if you do, it is leaving deposits in the pipes and every household appliance it runs through, from the coffee pot and the dishwasher to the shower head. Over time, this clogs things up and reduces their efficiency. It just might cost you your washing machine, and do you really want the expense of buying a new one?

People who don’t have these problems probably have full house water filtration.

Okay, you can take the shower head apart and clean it, but that’s one more chore we could all do without. And you can get chemicals from the supermarket to remove the crust from the coffee pot, but why put up with all the hassle?

Full House Water Filtration is Easy to Get

Not only do you have access to full house water filtration, but you have access to the best system there is. That’s because we can install a Kinetico system. We use them because they are superb.

We care about water quality. That’s why we are in this business and why we use only the best equipment. Why not let us help you by installing the best full-house water filtration system on the market?

Frequently Asked Questions About Whole House Water Filtration

Is a whole house water filter a good idea?

With a whole house system, you have the knowledge that all the water you use in your house has been filtered. But if you’re only concerned about the quality of your drinking water, a point-of-entry system may be sufficient.

A whole house water filter will remove many contaminants and pollutants so your health is not threatened by them, and your water will not have an unpleasant smell and taste. Removing sediment and particles from your water will prevent pipes and appliances from becoming blocked, avoiding costly replacement and repair bills. Your skin and hair will look better and skin conditions such as eczema will be helped by the removal of harmful chemicals, which gets into the air you breathe when the water turns to steam.

A system, however, can be expensive in terms of purchase cost, installation, and maintenance, and requires space that you may not have available easily. However, if you want to protect your family, avoid costly repair bills, and need peace of mind knowing your water is perfectly safe, a whole house water filter is definitely a good idea. A full house water filtration system ensures that every drop of water entering your home is purified, offering comprehensive protection against contaminants.

Can you put a water filter on your whole house?

There are two main types of water filters — point of use where the filtered water is only available from a single outlet, and whole house where it is available everywhere. The latter is normally the better method because it means all your water should be free of impurities.

A whole house water filter normally needs to be installed by a professional because it is fitted at the point where water enters your property. Water is processed through one or more filters and is then distributed in purified form to the rest of the house through existing pipes.

In its simplest form, installation may involve fitting the system between existing pipes and so, providing you have space for the equipment, is relatively straightforward. Difficulties may arise if extra pipes need to be installed. Additionally, although most filters work on water pressure, including a UV lamp to kill bacteria may require the installation of an extra power point.

Proper water filtration installation is crucial to ensure the effectiveness and longevity of your water treatment system. Despite any complications and extra costs that may occur, a whole house water filtration system provides the most complete protection and so will be worth it.

How long does a whole house water filter last?

A whole house water filter will remove various contaminants so that your water is purer and safer to drink and use. But it will only remain fully effective if you maintain it correctly, which means replacing filters and components when due.

A whole house system can contain several filters and replacement of these will vary:

  • a pre-filter for sediment needs to be replaced every 1-2 years
  • the main filter has an average life of ten years or one million gallons, although this may be halved if treating well water
  • post-filters require replacement every 1-2 years.

In addition, the main tank should be replaced every 3-10 years, depending on its capacity, while any UV lamps used to kill bacteria have a life of around one year and the tank for water softening is under warranty for at least 10 years. The average life of filters will be affected by:

  • the volume of water you use
  • how heavily contaminated the water is
  • the quality of filters that are installed.

It’s important you refer to the manufacturer’s recommendations, use the best quality components, and adhere strictly to a schedule. Failure to do so may mean the filters become clogged so your water is not purified, and your health will suffer.

How often should I change my whole house water filter?

A whole house water filter will remove contaminants from your water providing it is kept in good order. If you don’t change your filters at regular intervals, however, they’ll become clogged with sediment and a variety of contaminants, so they won’t be able to remove any more. As a result, the water will no longer be purified. Even worse, the filters will become breeding grounds for bacteria that will enter the water you drink and use.

You should change your filters at regular intervals, which are generally 1-2 years for a pre-filter, every 1-2 years for a post-filter, and up to ten years for the main filter. Your manufacturer will provide recommended intervals for the filters you use.

You’ll know your filters need changing if your water appears cloudy, smells or tastes bad, or appears different from normal. And if your water is cloudy from the faucet, it may indicate the presence of sediment or air bubbles. Filters that start white may also become discolored. If you change at regular intervals, however, you should never get to this stage and the health of your family will be safeguarded.

What do whole house water filters remove?

Most whole house filtration systems use multiple filters to deal with different contaminants. This normally results from a water test that identifies the contaminants that are present and so determines what filters are needed to remove them. The various filters include:

  • a pre-filter that removes sediment, rust, and other large particles so they don’t block other filters
  • an activated carbon filter that removes dangerous organic compounds, particularly VOCs, and heavy chlorine/chloramines
  • a copper/zinc filter that deals with chlorine, lead, mercury, nickel, and various other dissolved metals
  • reverse osmosis that is extremely effective at removing many contaminants including sodium, sulfite, lead, nickel, phosphate, fluoride, chloride, and cyanide.

A reverse osmosis filter is generally regarded as the best type of filter to remove a wide variety of contaminants. However, it is the most expensive to buy, creates a lot of waste water, and also removes beneficial minerals. We can test your water for free, determine what it contains, and recommend the best filters for you.

How to choose a whole house water filtration system

A whole house water filtration system differs from a point-of-use system since it treats all the water you use rather than only that from a single outlet. It’s important, therefore, that you choose the best one for the job since it’s crucial for the good health and well-being of your family. To find the most suitable system, consider a number of factors:

  • The contaminants you have in your water. We can arrange a free water test that will identify what your water contains so we can then install a system that removes them.
  • How much water you use, since you need a system that can handle the required flow rates but isn’t too big (and expensive) for your needs.
  • Where you need pure water. If this is only for drinking, then a point-of-use system will be adequate. However, if you want all your water to be free of contaminants, a whole house system is essential.
  • Maintenance and component costs, since these will be ongoing after the initial purchase cost. You will need to replace filters at recommended intervals so check what’s involved.
  • Product quality. Certain brands are well-known because they’re established suppliers of quality products. These may cost more than less well-known brands but will generally be more reliable and effective, and less costly in the long-term. Also, look for certified products since this gives an indication of quality.

Here at Aqua Clear Water Systems, we specialize in enhancing water quality for residential applications through innovative water treatment technologies. We only supply top-quality products and install ones that will efficiently deal with your problem.

Is a whole house filtration system the same as a water softener?

Most water, even when from a municipal supplier, contains some impurities that can be bad for your health. Water from certain areas of the country has a high magnesium and calcium content that causes hard water problems. These include an unsightly film forming on newly washed dishes, difficulties in getting a lather with soap and detergent, limp hair, and, most importantly, pipes and appliances that become clogged with limescale, so they operate less efficiently and eventually need replacing.

Contaminated water and hard water problems are treated differently. A whole house water filtration system uses a number of filters to remove various contaminants at the point where water enters your property. You can incorporate filters that include a pre-filter to remove sediment and large particles, a filter to remove chlorine and VOCs, an activated carbon filter to deal with pesticides and herbicides, and a post-filter to get rid of remaining organic particles.

A water softener uses an ion exchange process where resin beads attract calcium and magnesium ions, replacing them with sodium ions so the hard water is transformed into soft water that doesn’t contain limescale. The two processes are therefore entirely different but, if you have hard water that’s contaminated, you will need both. The good news is you can combine them into one system to produce pure and soft water.

Are home water filters worth it?

Water filters for your home can be expensive, with some estimates putting the cost at anywhere between $300 and $10,000, including the equipment and its installation. The huge difference in costs is largely down to the capabilities of the systems, some providing only basic removal of sediment while the more comprehensive versions deal with all known contaminants.

Aside from the initial costs, you will have some ongoing ones due to the need to replace filters and some other components. Nevertheless, these costs can be offset by savings, especially if you live in an area of high water contamination.

Hard water in the United States is a common issue that affects many households, leading to a variety of problems such as limescale buildup and inefficient appliance performance.

Sediment in your water will clog up your pipes and appliances, making them less efficient, causing higher energy bills and eventually resulting in expensive repair or replacement when the situation worsens. Added to this, some substances in water can cause corrosion, reducing lifespan and leading to greater costs.

The health of your family is something you can’t put a price on but definitely makes water filtration worthwhile. Even the most basic filter will improve your water, saving you money and preventing harm.
