What is the Best Home Water System?

Home water systems are usually recommended for anyone who requires cleaner drinking, cooking, and cleaning water. These whole water systems will often include more than seven filtration stages alongside the osmosis process to enable them to remove up to 99% of contaminants from the water. This can include everything from chemicals such as VOC’s to pesticides, herbicides, and heavy metals. The Kinetico 4040 whole house water refinement system is one of our most popular systems, especially for people who value clean and fresh cooking and drinking water but do not want to rely on buying bottled water.

Other systems may use the carbon filtration system. It’s one of the most common methods of water filtration and involves passing water through coconut shell carbon media.

How do Home Water Systems Work?

Your new whole house water filtration system will be installed at the point where water enters your home. This means that all water beyond that point will be filtered. But how do the systems work?

Water refinement system work by going through a 5 micron pre-filter to remove the dirt/sediment/iron that can be in your water from pipes breaking and really old metal pipes. The water then travels through a whole house filtration system to remove chlorine, chloramines, volatile organic compounds, and other chemicals. Imagine your refrigerator filter blown up into a big tank to treat the entire home. After we filter the water then we travel through an ion exchange system to remove calcium, magnesium, barium, iron, copper, radium, lead, and hardness. Then the water enters your home at high pressure, and free of contaminants that harm your homes plumbing system and your health.

An ion exchange water softener is made up of three main components.

  • A resin tank – the water flows through here before it reaches the household supply. The tank contains a bed of circular resin beads charged with positive sodium ions. The negative calcium and magnesium ions in water are attracted to these beads, removed from the water, and replaced with the sodium ions.
  • Control valve – this measures the flow of water through the resin tank. When the capacity is reached – based on the size of the house, occupants, and hardness of water – it triggers a regeneration cycle.
  • Brine tank – the tank holds a concentrated solution of sodium or sometimes potassium that’s used to restore the positive charge of the resin beads.

How to Maintain The In Home Water Systems

How you maintain your system depends on the type of system you have custom designed for your home. Some of our in home water systems require no maintenance at all, while others will need to be maintained every 1-2 years. In the case of an ion exchange system, adding salt once or twice per year is all you need to do ($30-$50 per year). The maintenance can be easily done yourself or we can do it for you.
